While staying at the Blue Dolphins Hotel Apartments in Firostefani, we suggest starting your tour visiting the sites in the capital town of Fira. The two main cathedrals - one orthodox and one catholic – and the Venetian Castle Gizi are the main attractions. On your way to the Archaeological and Folklore Museums, take some time to admire the town and its Cycladic architecture.
Other towns in Santorini offer splendid sites, as well. First off, purchase a good map of Santorini. The most important are the Ancient sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Thira, which are considered two jewels of Greece. In Oia, you can visit the Maritime Museum and wander through the charming town. In Imerovigli, we recommend visiting the Venetian Castle “Skaros” and also meander in the narrow alleyways. From Fira you can catch a tour boat to the small islands that are situated opposite Santorini Island and around the volcano: Thirassia, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni.
Other unique features of Santorini are its beaches, many of which have volcanic sands and beneficial waters. A visit to the Red and White Beaches in Akrotiri and to the Black Beaches of Kamari, Monolithos Perissa and Perivolos is a must. Other wonderful Santorini beaches include Amoudi, Armeni, Vourvoulou, Baxedes, and Vlyhada.
No trip to Santorini is complete without trying the local cuisine at one of the tavernas or restaurants on the island. The most popular dishes include fried white eggplant, fava (lentil dip), tomato balls, squash balls, sun-dried cherry tomatoes, and fresh seafood dishes. All meals are best accompanied by a bottle or two of superb Santorinian wine.
